GEO vs SEO vs AEO: what's the difference, and which one matters for you?

Updated November 1, 2026

SEO, GEO and AEO are three names for getting found, each coined for a different kind of search result. They overlap far more than the acronyms suggest, and for a local business the right order of work is clear once you see what each one targets.

The short version

  • SEO (search engine optimization): ranking in search engine results, including Google's regular results and the map pack.
  • AEO (answer engine optimization): being the direct answer to a question, in featured snippets, voice assistants and AI answers.
  • GEO (generative engine optimization): being used and named in answers written by generative AI like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Side by side

  • What you're trying to win: SEO, a position in a list of results; AEO, the single answer to a question; GEO, a mention or citation inside a written answer.
  • Where it shows up: SEO, Google and Bing results and Google Maps; AEO, featured snippets, "People also ask" and voice assistants; GEO, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI features.
  • How you measure it: SEO, rankings, impressions and clicks; AEO, snippet ownership; GEO, mention rate, citation rate and share of voice.
  • What moves it: all three reward clear, accurate, well-organised pages and a strong reputation. GEO leans more on mentions and reviews from other sites.

Where they overlap

AI search tools retrieve pages from search indexes before writing an answer, and answer boxes are pulled from pages that already rank. So the same page that ranks for "water heater replacement cost" is the page most likely to be quoted in a snippet and summarised by an assistant. Good SEO is the entry ticket to the other two.

Where they differ

SEO can reward a page for being the best single result. Generative answers combine several sources, so GEO rewards being described consistently across many of them: your site, your Google Business Profile, directories, reviews and independent mentions. AEO rewards formatting: a question as a heading followed by a direct, one-paragraph answer.

What a local business should do first

  1. Get the SEO basics right: a complete Google Business Profile, a page for each main service and area, and consistent listings.
  2. Answer real customer questions on those pages in a direct question-and-answer format (AEO).
  3. Build reviews and independent mentions so AI assistants find several sources that agree about you (GEO).
  4. Measure all three: map rankings across your service area, Google rankings for your services, and AI mentions for the questions customers ask.

Questions

Is GEO better than SEO?

They aren't competitors. GEO depends on SEO, because AI search tools read pages that search engines have already found and ranked.

What is AEO in simple terms?

Answer engine optimization means structuring content so a search engine or assistant can lift it as the direct answer to a question.

Do I need different content for each?

Usually not. One clear, well-structured page per service, with direct answers to common questions, serves all three.

Which should a small business track?

Map rankings and Google rankings for your main services, plus whether AI assistants mention you for the questions customers ask.
