Google Business Profile verification: how it works and how to pass first time

Updated November 1, 2026

Until your Google Business Profile is verified, it won't reliably appear on Google Maps or in the map pack, and you can't manage it fully. Verification is how Google confirms that your business is real, operates where you say it does, and that you're the one allowed to manage it.

Most verification problems come from rushing the video or from details that don't match. Here's how the process works and how to get it right the first time.

Verification methods

Google chooses which methods to offer based on your business type, location and history. You can't pick a method that isn't offered. The common ones are:

  • Video recording: you record a short, continuous video in the Google Business Profile or Google Maps app. This is now the most common method.
  • Live video call: a short call with a Google support agent, who asks you to show the same kinds of proof.
  • Phone or text: a code sent to your business phone number.
  • Email: a code sent to an email address, usually one on your business domain.
  • Postcard: a code mailed to your business address.
  • Instant verification: sometimes available if your website is already verified in Google Search Console with the same account.

Before you start

  • Use your real business name, exactly as it appears on your signage and paperwork.
  • Choose the most accurate primary category.
  • If customers come to you, enter your full address. If you only travel to customers, hide the address and set service areas.
  • Use a phone number and website that clearly belong to the business.
  • Make sure the details match your website and any existing listings.

What to film for video verification

Record one continuous clip with no cuts or edits. Google's guidance asks you to show three things:

  1. Your location: the outside of your premises with something that identifies the area, like the street sign, nearby businesses or the building number. Service area businesses can show the area they work from and branded vehicles.
  2. Your business: permanent signage, branded equipment, vehicles, tools of the trade, or stock that shows what you do.
  3. That you manage it: something only the business owner or staff could do, like unlocking the door, opening a cash register or point-of-sale system, opening a work van, or showing business paperwork such as a licence or utility bill.

After you submit

Video and document reviews are checked by Google and can take several business days. While you wait, avoid editing the business name, address or category, because changes can restart the review. You can check the status in your Business Profile.

If verification fails

  • Read the reason given, if any, and fix the underlying mismatch: name, address, category or phone.
  • Record a new video that shows the location, business and management proof more clearly, in daylight, without cuts.
  • If you're a service area business working from home, show your vehicle, equipment and business documents rather than the house.
  • If you keep getting stuck, contact Google Business Profile support from the help centre rather than creating a new profile.

Questions

How long does Google Business Profile verification take?

Codes by phone, text or email are instant. Video reviews usually take a few business days. Postcards can take a couple of weeks to arrive.

Can I verify without a storefront?

Yes. Service area businesses verify with their service areas set and the address hidden, usually by video showing their vehicle, equipment and business documents.

Why can't I choose postcard verification?

Google decides which methods are available for each profile. Many businesses are only offered video.

Do I need to verify again if I move?

Usually yes. Changing your address can trigger reverification, so plan the change and keep proof of the new location ready.
