Google AI Mode: what it means for local businesses
Updated November 1, 2026
AI Mode is Google's conversational search experience. Instead of a page of links, you get a written answer you can ask follow-up questions about, with links to sources and, for local searches, businesses from Google Maps.
If customers ask AI Mode "who's a good dentist near me that's open Saturdays", the answer names a few practices. Here's how that answer is put together and what you can do to be in it.
AI Mode vs AI Overviews vs the map pack
- The map pack: the familiar three businesses with a map, ranked by relevance, distance and prominence.
- AI Overviews: a short AI summary at the top of a normal results page, mostly on informational searches.
- AI Mode: a separate, conversational results view where the whole response is AI-written, and follow-up questions keep the context.
How AI Mode answers local questions
Google describes AI Mode as breaking a question into subtopics and running many searches at once, then combining the results. For local questions it draws on Google's business listings, including reviews, hours, photos and attributes, alongside web pages. So a question with several conditions (open Saturday, accepts new patients, good with kids) favours businesses whose profile and website state those details clearly.
What to do about it
- Fill in every relevant part of your Google Business Profile: categories, services, hours including holiday hours, attributes, and booking links.
- Keep collecting reviews that mention specifics. AI answers often summarise what reviews say.
- State conditions customers filter on, in text on your website: weekend hours, emergency service, languages spoken, insurance or financing accepted, areas served.
- Answer the follow-up questions customers ask, like cost, timing and what to expect, on your service pages.
Why your normal rankings still matter
AI Mode retrieves from Google's search index and business listings, so businesses that already rank well in the map pack and for service searches are in the pool it chooses from. Improving your map rankings across your service area and your Google rankings for each service is still the most dependable way to show up.
Tracking AI Mode
AI Mode answers change with the wording, the follow-ups and the searcher's location, so track a fixed set of questions from your service area over time. Record whether you're named and which competitors appear. Compare that with your map rankings for the same services to see whether AI Mode is following the map, or favouring someone else.
Questions
Can I optimize specifically for AI Mode?
Mostly through the same work that improves local search: a complete Google Business Profile, strong reviews and clear service pages. There's no separate AI Mode setting.
Does AI Mode use my Google Business Profile?
For local questions, Google draws on business listings, including reviews, hours and attributes, which is why a complete profile matters.
Is AI Mode replacing the map pack?
Not at the moment. The map pack is still shown on most local searches. AI Mode is an additional place customers can find you.
How do I know if AI Mode mentions my business?
Ask it the questions your customers ask, from your service area, on a regular schedule, and record the results. SearchTerrain does this automatically.
