Local SEO for small business: what it is and where to start

Updated November 1, 2026

Local SEO is everything that helps nearby customers find your business when they search: in the Google map pack, in regular Google results, on Google Maps, and increasingly in AI assistants like ChatGPT. For most small businesses that serve a town or region, it's the cheapest steady source of new customers there is.

You don't need to do everything. A handful of things make most of the difference, and this guide covers them in the order that pays off fastest.

What is local SEO?

Local SEO is search engine optimization for searches with local intent, like "plumber near me", "dentist in Oakville" or "best pizza downtown". Google shows these searches differently: usually a map with three businesses (the map pack), then regular results. Local SEO covers both, plus your Google Business Profile, reviews, listings on other sites, and your website's service and location pages.

How Google ranks local businesses

Google says local results are based mainly on three things:

  • Relevance: how well your profile and website match what was searched.
  • Distance: how far your business is from the searcher or the place they searched for.
  • Prominence: how well known and well regarded your business is, from reviews, links, mentions and your website's standing in search.

Where to start: the first five things

  1. Claim, verify and complete your Google Business Profile, with the right primary category and every service listed.
  2. Make sure your website has a clear page for each main service, saying where you offer it.
  3. Ask every happy customer for a Google review, and reply to every review.
  4. Get your business name, address and phone number consistent across the main directories.
  5. Measure where you rank, across your whole service area, so you know what's working.

Why searching for yourself isn't enough

Map results change street by street, because distance matters. Your own searches are also personalised to you. A business can be first on the owner's phone at the shop and invisible two towns over, where half its customers live. Checking your rankings from points across your service area shows what customers actually see.

How long local SEO takes

Profile fixes and category changes can move map rankings within weeks. New service pages usually take a few weeks to a few months to rank. Reviews and reputation build steadily over months. Check progress monthly rather than daily.

Questions

Is local SEO worth it for a small business?

For businesses that serve a local area, usually yes. Customers searching for a local service are often ready to buy, and the main tools, like your Google Business Profile, are free.

Can I do local SEO myself?

Yes. The basics are a complete Google Business Profile, steady reviews, consistent listings and clear service pages. Tracking tells you whether it's working.

What's the difference between local SEO and regular SEO?

Local SEO focuses on searches with a location, including the map pack and Google Business Profile. Regular SEO targets searches where location doesn't matter.

How much does local SEO cost?

Doing it yourself costs time plus any tools you use. Agencies typically charge a monthly fee. Whichever you choose, measure rankings so you know what you're getting.
