Plumbing SEO: getting the call when something breaks

Updated November 1, 2026

When a pipe bursts or a water heater fails, people don't browse. They search, look at the map, and call one of the first businesses they see. Plumbing SEO is about being one of those businesses, in every part of your service area, at the moment someone needs you.

Urgent searches and planned jobs

Plumbing searches fall into two groups. Urgent ones: "emergency plumber", "plumber near me", "burst pipe", "clogged drain", "no hot water". Planned ones: "water heater installation", "sump pump replacement", "bathroom plumbing", "backflow testing". Urgent searches are decided almost entirely in the map pack. Planned jobs give your website more chance to win.

Your Google Business Profile

For urgent jobs, your profile is your storefront:

  • Primary category "Plumber", plus specific categories only where they apply.
  • Accurate hours. If you offer 24/7 service, say so in your hours and description, and answer those calls.
  • Services listed individually: drain cleaning, water heaters, sump pumps, leak repair and so on.
  • Service areas that match where you actually go.
  • Recent photos of your team, vans and real jobs.

Service and area pages

Give each main service a page that explains the problem, what you do about it, rough pricing or what affects the price, and how quickly you can be there. Add pages for the towns you most want to win, with jobs you've done there. Clear, fast-loading pages with a visible phone number turn urgent visitors into calls.

Reviews

For urgent jobs, people pick the business that looks most trustworthy at a glance: rating and review count. Ask every customer after the job, reply to every review, and keep a steady pace through the year. Reviews that mention the problem you fixed and the town help Google connect you with those searches.

Measure across your service area

Because distance is part of Google's local ranking, a plumber can rank first near the shop and be invisible across town. Check your main searches from points across the whole area you serve, every few weeks, to see where you win the map and where competitors take the calls.

Questions

What matters most for emergency plumbing searches?

Your position in the map pack near the searcher: category, distance, reviews and accurate hours. Your website matters more for planned jobs.

Should I list 24/7 if I only sometimes answer at night?

Only list hours you reliably cover. Missed calls and inaccurate hours lead to bad reviews and lost trust.

How do I compete with big plumbing companies?

Win specific services and nearby towns first, with strong pages and reviews. Large companies often have weaker coverage in smaller towns.

How long does plumbing SEO take?

Profile improvements can show within weeks. Pages, reviews and links typically take a few months to move rankings.
