Google Maps rank checker: see your rank across your whole service area
Updated November 1, 2026
Searching for yourself on your own phone shows one result, from one spot, personalised to you. Your customers are spread across your service area, and each of them sees a different map. A Google Maps rank checker shows the ranking they actually see.
SearchTerrain checks your position on Google Maps from a grid of points across each area you serve, for each search you care about, and shows it as a map: green where you're in the top three, red where you're buried, and grey where you don't appear at all.
How a grid rank check works
You choose a search, such as "roof repair", and an area, such as Guelph. SearchTerrain runs that search on Google Maps from every point of a grid laid over the area (for example 7 by 7 points, a couple of kilometres apart) and records where your business appears at each point, along with the businesses ranked above you.
The result is a map of your visibility: where you're winning, where you fade out, and which competitors take your place in each part of town.
What you see for each search
- Your rank at every point of the grid, from 1 to 20, or not found.
- The share of the area where you're in the top three, and where you appear at all.
- The competitors that rank at each point, with their rating and review count.
- Changes since your last check, point by point.
- Which of your Google Business Profiles is being tracked, so you can confirm it's yours.
Who it's for
Local businesses that serve an area rather than a single storefront: trades and home services, clinics, law firms, and anyone whose customers search for them on Google Maps. It's also built for agencies and consultants who manage local SEO for clients and need to show what changed.
More than the map
Google Maps is one part of how customers find you. SearchTerrain also tracks your regular Google rankings, your Search Console clicks, whether AI assistants like ChatGPT recommend you, your backlinks and your website health, and turns it all into a short list of what to work on next.
How it measures
Checks run as a new visitor searching from each point, with no personal history, so results are comparable from one check to the next. Each point records the full top 20 Google returns there. Your own searches may differ, because Google personalises results to you; that's exactly why a neutral, repeatable check is useful.
Questions
Is there a free Google Maps rank check?
Yes. The free snapshot on our home page shows your current Google visibility in about 20 seconds, with no signup. Grid scans across your service area are part of the paid plans, which include a free trial.
How many points does a grid scan check?
You choose the grid size and spacing. A 7 by 7 grid checks 49 points; larger plans allow bigger grids for wider service areas.
How often are rankings checked?
As often as your plan allows: monthly, twice a month or weekly, plus checks you start yourself.
Why is my rank different when I search myself?
Google personalises results and ranks partly on distance. A neutral check from many points shows what customers across your area see.
