How to rank higher on Google Maps
Updated November 1, 2026
Ranking higher on Google Maps comes down to giving Google stronger evidence that you're the right answer for a search, in the area where it's made. There are no tricks that last. There is a short list of things that consistently work, and a way of measuring them so you know what's helping.
Start by measuring where you rank today
Your rank changes with the searcher's location, so a single search tells you very little. Before changing anything, check your position for your two or three most valuable searches from points across your service area. You'll usually find a strong area around your location that fades with distance, and towns where competitors dominate. That map tells you where to focus, and it's the baseline you'll compare against later.
Fix your categories and profile
These are the quickest wins, because they change how relevant Google thinks you are.
- Primary category: pick the most specific category that describes your main service. Compare with the businesses already in the top three for your main search.
- Additional categories: add the ones that genuinely apply, not every loosely related option.
- Services and products: list each service you want to be found for, in the words customers use.
- Description, hours, attributes and photos: complete them all. Add new photos regularly, especially of real work.
- Business name: use your real name. Adding keywords or towns breaks Google's guidelines and risks suspension.
Build a steady flow of reviews
Reviews are one of the strongest prominence signals. Aim for a steady pace rather than a one-off push: ask every customer after a job, make it easy with a direct review link, and reply to every review. When customers naturally mention the service and the town in their review, it helps Google connect your profile with those searches. Never buy reviews or offer incentives for them.
Give your website a page for each service and key town
Your Business Profile links to your website, and Google uses that site to judge what you do and how well established you are. A single homepage that lists everything is weak evidence. A clear page for each main service, and pages for the towns you most want to win, gives Google something specific to match. Write them for customers: what you do there, examples of jobs, prices or ranges if you can, and how to get in touch.
Earn local links and mentions
Links and mentions from other local websites show Google that you're a real, known business. Good sources are usually close at hand: suppliers and manufacturers you work with, trade associations, the chamber of commerce, local sponsorships, community events and local news. A handful of genuine local links is worth more than hundreds of low-quality directory or spam links.
Check every few weeks and keep going
Map rankings move gradually. Recheck the same searches, from the same points, every two to four weeks. Look at where your top-three area grows or shrinks, which competitors move, and which towns respond to the pages and reviews you've added. Keep doing what moves the map and drop what doesn't.
Questions
How long does it take to rank higher on Google Maps?
Profile and category fixes can show within a few weeks. Reviews, content and links compound over months. In competitive cities it can take longer.
Does posting on Google Business Profile help ranking?
Posts keep your profile active and can help customers decide, but on their own they're a minor factor. Categories, reviews, proximity and your website matter more.
Do I need a website to rank on Google Maps?
You can appear without one, but a good website with service and location pages makes ranking for competitive searches much easier.
Why do competitors with fewer reviews rank above me?
They may be closer to the searcher, have a better-matching category, or have a stronger website. Reviews are important but they aren't the only factor.
