How to show up in Google AI Overviews

Updated November 1, 2026

AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries that appear at the top of many Google results, with links to the pages they draw from. For informational searches like "how much does a new roof cost" or "why is my furnace short cycling", they often sit above everything else, including the map pack.

Google has been fairly direct about what it takes to be included. Here's what it says, and how it applies to a local business.

What Google says about AI Overviews

Google's guidance for site owners is that there are no special requirements for AI Overviews beyond normal SEO. To be eligible as a supporting link, a page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. The same quality signals Google uses for regular results apply.

Google also notes that AI Overviews may use a technique that runs several related searches to build an answer, which means pages ranking for closely related questions can be cited, not only the top results for the exact search.

Which searches trigger AI Overviews

AI Overviews appear mostly on informational and comparison searches: costs, how-tos, "is it worth it", "what's the difference between". Searches with clear local hiring intent, like "roofer near me", usually lead with the map pack instead. For a local business, AI Overviews are mainly a chance to be the source behind the research customers do before they hire.

How to make your pages AI Overview friendly

  • Answer one question per section, with the question as the heading and a direct answer in the first sentence or two.
  • Give real specifics from your work: typical price ranges in your area, timelines, what affects cost, what you check first. Generic copy is easy to replace with someone else's page.
  • Keep important facts in text, not only in images or video.
  • Make sure the page is indexed (check it with Search Console's URL Inspection) and isn't blocked by a nosnippet tag.
  • Show who's behind the advice: your business name, experience and credentials.

Can you opt out?

Yes, partly. The nosnippet and max-snippet controls limit what Google can show from a page, including in AI Overviews, but they also limit regular snippets, so most businesses are better off staying eligible.

How to track AI Overview visibility

Search Console counts AI Overview impressions and clicks within your regular web search totals, without a separate filter. To see whether you're being cited for specific searches, check the results for those searches on a schedule, from your area, and record which sites are linked. Watch Search Console for impressions growing on question-style searches; it's a good sign your pages are being shown.

Questions

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks to my website?

For simple questions they can, because the answer is on the results page. For local businesses the bigger prize is being the cited source on research searches that lead to a hire.

Do I need structured data for AI Overviews?

Google says it isn't required. Structured data still helps search engines understand your pages, so it's worth having where it fits, but it won't get you into an Overview on its own.

Why is a competitor cited and not me?

Their page may answer the question more directly, rank for related questions, or be more specific. Compare the cited page with yours section by section.

Are AI Overviews shown in Canada?

Yes. AI Overviews are available in many countries and languages, including the US and Canada.
