Google Business Profile categories: how to choose the right ones

Updated November 1, 2026

Your primary category is one of the strongest relevance signals on your Google Business Profile. It tells Google which searches you should appear for and unlocks features like service menus, booking links and attributes. A wrong or vague category can keep you out of the searches that matter most.

How categories work

  • You choose one primary category and can add up to nine additional categories.
  • You must pick from Google's list of thousands of categories. You can't create your own.
  • The primary category carries the most weight and decides which features and attributes your profile can show.
  • Categories describe what your business is, not every service it offers. Services are listed separately.

Choosing your primary category

Pick the most specific category that describes your main business. "Roofing contractor" beats "Contractor"; "Family law attorney" beats "Lawyer" if family law is most of your work; "Emergency veterinarian hospital" beats "Veterinarian" only if that's truly what you are. Ask: what would customers call you in one phrase?

See what the top businesses use

Search your main service in your area and open the businesses in the map pack. Their primary category appears under the business name. If most of the top three share a category you're not using, that's a strong hint. Some third-party browser extensions also show the secondary categories competitors use.

Secondary categories

Add secondary categories for distinct services you genuinely offer that customers search for separately: a plumber who also does drain cleaning and water heater installation might add those categories. Don't add loosely related categories to cast a wider net; they can dilute what Google thinks you're best at and attract the wrong calls.

Testing a category change

Category changes can shift rankings within days. Before changing your primary category, record your map rankings across your service area for your main searches. Make one change at a time, then check again after a week or two, so you know what the change did. Frequent changes can also trigger a review of your profile, so don't flip back and forth.

Questions

How many categories can I have on Google Business Profile?

One primary category plus up to nine additional categories.

What if my exact category doesn't exist?

Choose the closest, most specific option, then describe the exact service in your services list, description and website.

Do secondary categories help ranking?

They help you appear for searches related to those categories. The primary category has the strongest effect.

How often can I change categories?

As needed, but change rarely and one at a time. Measure your rankings before and after so you can judge the effect.
