Google Business Profile suspended: why it happens and how to get reinstated
Updated November 1, 2026
A suspended profile can disappear from Google Maps overnight, taking your calls with it. Suspensions usually follow an edit, a change in Google's review of your listing, or a report from someone else. Most are fixable, but the order you do things in matters.
First: don't create a new profile
A new profile for the same business is treated as a duplicate and can make the problem worse. Don't make further edits either until you know the cause. Work from the suspended profile and use Google's appeal process.
Common reasons for suspension
- Keywords or locations added to the business name, like "Smith Plumbing Best Plumber Toronto".
- An address you don't operate from: a virtual office, mailbox service or co-working desk with no staffed presence.
- Showing an address while also only serving customers at their locations, when it should be hidden.
- Service areas that stretch too far from where the business is based.
- Duplicate profiles for the same location.
- A category that doesn't match what the business does, or a business type Google treats as higher risk, such as locksmiths and some home services.
- A recent edit to the name, address or category that triggered a fresh review.
Gather your evidence
Appeals are reviewed by people who need proof the business is real and operates as listed. Prepare clear photos or scans of:
- A business licence or registration showing the business name.
- A utility bill or lease for the business address, if you show one.
- Permanent signage at the location, photographed so the address or surroundings are visible.
- Branded vehicles and equipment, for service area businesses.
- A tax or insurance document in the business name.
Fix the cause, then appeal
- Correct anything that breaks the guidelines: remove keywords from the name, hide the address if you serve customers at their location, trim service areas.
- Submit an appeal through Google's Business Profile appeals tool, from the account that manages the profile.
- Upload your evidence, making sure the business name and address on documents match the profile exactly.
- Wait for the decision and avoid further edits in the meantime. Reviews can take from a few days to a few weeks.
After reinstatement
Reviews and photos usually come back with the profile. Rankings can take a little time to settle. Check your map rankings across your service area for a few weeks afterwards, and keep the details stable: frequent edits to the name, address or category are a common trigger for another review.
Questions
How long does a Google Business Profile reinstatement take?
It varies. Some appeals are decided in days, others take a few weeks, especially if Google asks for more evidence.
Will I lose my reviews?
Reviews are normally restored when a suspended profile is reinstated. Creating a new profile instead would start you from zero.
Can a competitor get my profile suspended?
Anyone can suggest edits or report a listing, and reports can prompt a review. A profile that follows the guidelines and has solid evidence is in a much stronger position.
What's the difference between suspended and restricted?
A suspension removes or disables the profile. Restrictions limit specific things, such as editing or posting, while the profile stays visible. The fix starts the same way: find the cause and use the appeals tool.
