Local SEO in Canada: directories, domains and what's different
Updated November 1, 2026
Local SEO works the same way in Canada as anywhere Google is used: your Google Business Profile, reviews, website and listings decide whether you're found. A few things are specific to Canada, though: the directories Canadians use, bilingual searches, and how Google treats Canadian domains.
Canadian business directories worth listing on
Start with the major platforms, then the Canadian directories, then your industry's sites:
- Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect.
- Yellow Pages (yp.ca), one of the most widely used Canadian directories.
- Canada411 and 411.ca, for phone and address lookups.
- Yelp Canada and Facebook.
- Better Business Bureau, which operates across Canada.
- Your local chamber of commerce, and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce network.
- Canadian industry sites, such as HomeStars for home services, RateMDs for health practitioners, and provincial law society and professional association directories.
- Regional directories and local business associations in your town.
Should a Canadian business use a .ca domain?
A .ca domain is a country signal: it tells Google your site is meant for Canada, which can help in Canadian results. A .com works too, especially if your content, address and listings make your Canadian location clear. If you already rank with a .com, there's no need to switch. If you're starting fresh and only serve Canada, .ca is a sensible choice.
Bilingual and French searches
If you serve French-speaking customers, in Quebec, Ottawa, New Brunswick or elsewhere, create real French pages rather than relying on automatic translation, and link the English and French versions with hreflang tags. Google Business Profile supports listing the languages you serve in. Track your rankings for French searches separately, because results can differ completely from the English ones.
Ranking across provinces and service areas
Canadian service areas tend to be large and towns far apart, so distance plays an even bigger role in map rankings. Google's guideline of service areas within about two hours' drive of your base still applies. To reach customers further away, focus on useful town pages that rank in the organic results, and on reviews from customers in those towns.
Measuring local visibility in Canada
Track rankings from Canadian locations, not just in general. A ranking checked from the US, or without a location, can look nothing like what someone in Kitchener or Kelowna sees. Check map rankings from points across each town you serve, and organic rankings set to the city or region.
Questions
What are the best Canadian business directories?
Start with Google, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yellow Pages, Canada411, Yelp, Facebook and the BBB, then add your local chamber of commerce and your industry's Canadian sites.
Is Google.ca different from Google.com?
Google shows results based mainly on the searcher's location, so Canadians get Canadian results either way. What matters is that your business is clearly Canadian and local.
Do I need a French website?
Only if you serve French-speaking customers. If you do, real French pages and a French-language listing help you appear in French searches.
