BrightLocal alternative: how SearchTerrain compares

Updated November 3, 2026

BrightLocal is one of the best known local SEO platforms, built around rank tracking, citations, reviews and reporting for many locations. SearchTerrain is newer and narrower: it measures one business's visibility on Google Maps, in Google search and in AI answers, then turns that into a short list of what to do next.

They overlap, but they're built for different jobs. This page sets out the differences fairly, including where BrightLocal is the better choice.

The short version

  • Choose BrightLocal if you manage many locations or clients, need citation building and listings sync, or want review monitoring and Business Profile post scheduling in one place, at a low price per location.
  • Choose SearchTerrain if you're one local business (or its marketer) and want a single view of maps, search and AI visibility, with plain-language priorities each week instead of raw reports.

Where BrightLocal is stronger

BrightLocal has been building local SEO tools for years, and it shows in breadth. Its citation builder submits and cleans up your business listings across directories, which SearchTerrain doesn't do at all. On its Grow plan it monitors and requests reviews across many sites, and its pricing scales smoothly from one location to a hundred. For agencies working across dozens of clients, or chains with many branches, that breadth is hard to beat, and the entry price is lower than ours.

Where SearchTerrain is different

SearchTerrain is made by Vortio, a web design and SEO studio, to answer one question for a single business: where am I visible, where am I not, and what should I do about it this week. Maps rankings across your area, Google positions by city, AI answers, Search Console clicks, backlinks and website health feed one plan, ranked by likely impact.

AI tracking goes deeper than mention counts. For ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude, SearchTerrain records the web pages each assistant's search found while answering, which of those it cited, and whether you were mentioned or recommended. That shows the difference between an assistant never finding your site and finding it but citing a directory instead, which call for different fixes.

Pricing in practice

For one location, BrightLocal costs less: its Track plan is $41 a month billed monthly, against SearchTerrain's $99 Starter. The comparison changes if you'd otherwise pay separately for AI visibility tracking, Search Console reporting and a backlink tool, or if what you're really missing is someone telling you what to fix first. Citation building on BrightLocal is billed per citation on top of the plan.

Switching or using both

Some businesses use both: BrightLocal for listings and reviews, SearchTerrain for visibility and priorities. If you're moving across, add your business and the searches you care about, and SearchTerrain runs its first maps, search and AI checks the same day. Your history starts from that first check, so keep exports of past BrightLocal reports if you need the older trend.

Questions

Is SearchTerrain cheaper than BrightLocal?

No. For a single location BrightLocal's plans cost less. SearchTerrain includes AI visibility across four assistants, Search Console, backlinks and a weekly action plan in one subscription, which is where the difference comes from.

Does SearchTerrain build citations?

No. If you need directory listings built or cleaned up, BrightLocal's citation builder or a similar service is the right tool. SearchTerrain focuses on measuring visibility and deciding what to work on.

Can agencies use SearchTerrain for many clients?

Each SearchTerrain subscription covers one business. Agencies with many clients will usually find BrightLocal's multi-location pricing a better fit.

Which tracks AI search better?

Both track ChatGPT and Google's AI Mode. BrightLocal adds AI Overviews; SearchTerrain adds Perplexity and Claude and shows which web pages each answer's search found and cited, not only whether you were named.
