Near me SEO: how to show up when customers search "near me"

Updated November 4, 2026

"Plumber near me", "dentist near me open now", "roof repair near me": these searches are how many customers find local businesses. The good news is you don't need to optimize for the words "near me" at all. Google already knows where the searcher is. What matters is everything that makes you the best nearby match.

How Google handles "near me"

When someone searches "near me", Google uses their location and shows businesses that are relevant, close and prominent. The words "near me" tell Google to focus on proximity; they're not something your page needs to contain. Pages stuffed with "near me" look spammy and don't help.

What decides who shows up

  • Relevance: your Business Profile categories, services and website clearly match the search.
  • Distance: how close you are to the searcher, which you can't change, though service areas and good coverage help.
  • Prominence: reviews, rating, links, mentions and how well known your business is.
  • Open now: for searches with "open now", accurate hours decide whether you appear at all.

What actually helps

  • The most accurate primary category on your Business Profile.
  • Every service listed, in the words customers use.
  • A website page for each main service, mentioning the towns you serve naturally.
  • Accurate hours, including holidays.
  • A steady flow of reviews from customers across your area.

Measure "near me" properly

Because results depend on where the searcher stands, checking "near me" from your office tells you almost nothing about customers across town. Check from a grid of points across your service area to see where you show up and where you don't.

Questions

Should I add "near me" to my website?

No. Google already knows the searcher's location. Write naturally about your services and the towns you serve instead.

Why don't I show up for "near me" searches?

Usually your category doesn't match, competitors are closer or have more reviews, or your hours show you closed. Check your rank from several points to see the pattern.

Can I rank for "near me" outside my town?

Distance matters a lot, so it's harder. Service areas, pages about those towns and reviews from customers there help.

How do I check my "near me" ranking?

Use a grid rank checker that searches from many points across your area as a neutral visitor.
