Fake Google reviews: how to report them and get them removed

Updated November 4, 2026

A fake one-star review from someone who was never a customer feels deeply unfair, especially when your rating is built on real work. Google does remove reviews that break its policies, but only if you report them properly and give it a clear reason.

What Google will remove

Google removes reviews that break its policies, not reviews that are simply negative. Reportable reviews include:

  • Fake engagement: reviews from people who weren't customers, from competitors, or posted in bulk.
  • Conflicts of interest: reviews by current or former employees, or about a competitor.
  • Off-topic content: rants about unrelated issues, politics or social commentary.
  • Harassment, hate speech, profanity or personal information.
  • Spam, advertising or links.

How to report a review

  1. Open your Business Profile on Google Search or Maps while signed in as an owner or manager.
  2. Go to Reviews, find the review, and choose to report it.
  3. Pick the policy reason that fits best. Be accurate: "not a customer" usually falls under fake engagement or conflict of interest.
  4. Check the status later in Google's Reviews Management Tool, where you can see whether the report was accepted.

If Google says no

If a report is rejected, you can appeal through the Reviews Management Tool and add context, such as that no customer by that name exists in your records or that the reviewer is a competitor. Appeals are reviewed by a person. If many fake reviews arrive at once, a pattern of attack, contact Google Business Profile support directly and describe what's happening.

Limit the damage while you wait

Reply calmly and factually so readers see your side: say you have no record of the customer and invite them to get in touch. Then keep collecting genuine reviews from real customers. A steady flow of real reviews is the best protection, because one fake review matters far less among fifty real ones.

Never fight fake with fake

Buying reviews, writing them yourself, or offering incentives breaks Google's policies and, in many places, consumer protection law. Google can remove reviews, restrict new ones, and show a warning on profiles that manipulate reviews. It's never worth the risk.

Questions

How long does Google take to remove a fake review?

It varies from a few days to a few weeks. Check the status in the Reviews Management Tool, and appeal if it's rejected.

Can I remove a review just because it's negative?

No. Google only removes reviews that break its policies. Reply to genuine negative reviews instead.

What if a competitor is leaving fake reviews?

Report each one under conflict of interest or fake engagement, appeal with evidence if needed, and contact Business Profile support if it's a sustained attack.

Should I reply to a fake review?

Yes, briefly and calmly. Say you can't find a record of them and invite contact. It reassures readers while Google reviews your report.
