Google Business Profile posts: what to post and what they do
Updated November 4, 2026
Posts let you add updates, offers and events to your Business Profile, where they can appear when people view your business on Google Search and Maps. They won't transform your rankings on their own, but they make an active, trustworthy profile, and they can tip a customer's decision.
Post types
Business Profile offers a few kinds of posts:
- Updates: news, recent jobs, tips, or anything new about your business.
- Offers: a promotion with dates, an optional coupon code and terms.
- Events: something happening at a set date and time, such as an open house or a workshop.
What to post
The best posts show real, recent work and answer what customers want to know right now:
- A recent job, with a real photo, the service and the town.
- Seasonal reminders: furnace checks before winter, gutter cleaning in the fall, patio season in spring.
- Answers to common questions customers ask on the phone.
- New services, new staff, longer hours or a new service area.
- Genuine offers with clear terms, not permanent "sales".
How often
Weekly is a good rhythm for most local businesses; every two weeks is fine if that's sustainable. Consistency matters more than volume, and an abandoned profile with a two-year-old post looks worse than one with no posts.
Follow the rules
Posts must follow Google's content policies: no phone numbers in the post text, no misleading offers, and nothing off-topic or prohibited for your industry. Posts that break the rules are rejected or removed, and repeated problems can affect your profile.
What posts do for rankings
Treat posts as a conversion and trust tool rather than a ranking lever. What moves map rankings is your category, relevance, reviews and distance. Posts help when someone is already looking at your profile and deciding whether to call.
Questions
Do Google Business Profile posts help SEO?
Mostly indirectly. They make your profile more active and persuasive, which helps people choose you, but categories, reviews and relevance matter far more for rankings.
How long do posts stay up?
Updates stay visible on your profile, with newer posts shown first. Offers and events show until their end date.
What should a roofer or plumber post?
Recent jobs with real photos and the town, seasonal reminders, answers to common questions and any genuine offers.
Can I put my phone number in a post?
No. Google's post policies don't allow phone numbers in the text. Use the call button option instead.
